This is a great performance, it has what so many don't have that are just rattled off at breakneck tempo: profundity, a big, powerful and weighy texture, plenty of muscle, grandeur, tremendous sense of drive - and yet, all this without the slightest hint of hysteria that disfigures so many readings where you feel the conductor thinks he's driving a Ferrari. Herbig makes you feel that you are in the presence of one of the supreme works of art of Western culture. This is "interpretation" in the true sense of the word - not a conductor's ego trip, but a faithful and idiomatic performance of the music. It compares with such masterful readings as Furtwängler, Klemperer and Masur and stands in line with them. The Funeral March is grave, not too slow, but flowing and imbued with an ineffable sense of dignity in grief. The phrasing and the transitions are impeccably mastered. It sounds like a majestic river flowing downstream, no exaggerations, no speeding up or slowing down for effect, and some touchingly eloquent oboe playing. The way the orchestra responds to this discipline is marvellous, mellifluous and noble.
The remaining two movements come off equally well. All told, this is quality music making - an indispensable account of this great music. The sound quality is warm and spacious, good detail. Like the performance, it is natural without exaggeration.
I might be worthwhile to mention that I do not object to faster speeds. But the reader should bear in mind that excitement is not created by speed. For example, the Formula 1 exercise by Chailly leaves you breathless with dismay, not excitement. In contrast, Karajan's 1962 fast tempi are so tightly enmeshed with his rhythmic pulse that the speed itself does not strike you as unwarranted. Böhm (Vienna) is pretty fast too, but not hectic. Herbig is more relaxed, drawing his huge power from the grand sweep of his line. To my mind, this is the most convincing and, ultimately, most truly Beethovenian approach. The sound quality is warm and spacious, good detail. Like the performance, it is natural without exaggeration. ~ Jurgen Lawrenz, www.amazon.com
