Alan Broadbent is one of contemporary music's most brilliant stylists. And though too long among L.A.'s best-kept musical secrets, the versatile virtuoso originally from New Zealand has attained high-visibility successes of late as a featured soloist with guitarist Lee Ritenour and bassist Charlie Haden's Quartet West. Here, Broadbent is teamed with bassist Putter Smith and drummer Frank Gibson, two longstanding colleagues, and two outstanding rhythm players whose devotion to the hightest ideals of group playing make them accompanists par excellence.
Indeed, the ESP-like interactions among members of Broadbent's trio recall the extraordinary empathy characterizing the best of Bill Evans' trios; the Evans comparison is further apt, especially in more gossamer performances like Broadbent's wistful reading of Irving Berlin's "How Deep is the Ocean." For "Adam's Apple," a Broadbent original arranged for the Woody Herman Band, the pianist evokes the swinging bluesiness of someone like Gene Harris. Along with Broadbent's sparkling solos, Smith's rock-steady ostinatos and dashing solos (check out "A Night in Tunisia") and Gibson's lyrical brush-work (as in the pianist's poignant ballad "Heart's Desire") deserve commendation. Throughout, Broadbent presents nothing less than sophisticated, state-of-the-art, sound-of-surprise mainstream jazz at the summit! Terrific!
