Recall seeing this movie when it was first released 51 years ago. I was a radio rookie in those days and tried to see every jazz-oriented movie that came to my city. I guess most of you will be aware that the story-line was woven around the dramatic life story of jazz trumpeter Red Nichols. Although not 100% accurate in every detail it was a "feel good" film and the music was first class. Red's arrangers of the '40s and '50s clarinetist Heinie Beau and pianist Bobby Hammack were contracted by Paramount to supply the jazz arrangements and Alexander Courage (of "Star Trek Theme" fame) wrote the opening "Main Title" track.
The film starred Barbara Bel Geddes as Red's wife, a very talented young Susan Gordon as daughter Dorothy, Bob Crosby, Bobby Troup and of course the real stars of the show, Louis Armstrong and Danny Kaye as Red himself. Kaye was quite brilliant in the role and I understand Red himself was more than happy with his portrayal.
After the film was released Red enjoyed a renewed popularity leading to many new recording contracts. The Five Pennies group which began playing at the end of 1926 with a series of successful recordings, existed until the mid-thirties, but most of the time only in the studios. Red engaged his sidemen from various sources. The personnel reads like a who's who of jazz in the '30s Joe Venuti, Eddie Lang, Benny Goodman and Jack Teagarden to name just four.
The cover of my London Records release is particularly shabby so I've supplied a copy of the original Dot vinyl cover I found on line. There is also a Decca release. I've scanned part of my scruffy London back cover so that you can click to bring up to full screen to see who's performing on each track. Don't let my cover scruff put you off downloading though. The audio quality is quite good.
