The Vienna Art Orchestra was formed in Austria in 1977 by Mathias Ruegg, Wolfgang Puschnig and Woody Schabata.The ensemble's repertoire is astonishingly eclectic, including as it does compositions by Anthony Braxton, Ornette Coleman, Eric Dolphy, Duke Ellington, Scott Joplin, Charles Mingus, Jelly Roll Morton, Lennie Tristano and, by way of charming variation, Erik Satie and George Gershwin.In 1997, another mark of the Vienna Art Orchestra's national status was displayed when an inter-city train on the Vienna-Salzburg route was named after the orchestra. Their American Rhapsody:A Tribute to George Gershwin, in 1998, attracted several noted guest artists, mostly recorded separately and dubbed in, among whom were Dee Dee Bridgewater, Art Farmer, Shirley Horn, Joe Lovano, T.S. Monk and Monica Zetterlund.
