Ben Webster, as most readers know, is one of the outstanding 'tenor saxophonists of the swing era. He has paid several very successful visits to Europe as a solo jazz artist and this LP, recorded recently in Copenhagen, catches him playing a typical programme with rather more verve than he sometimes displays. The slow, romantic numbers he favours these days are heavily featured, but he becomes quite animated, for this kind of context, on Easy To Love and the blues Blue Light. Most of the tracks feature him with piano, drums and a somewhat over-recorded bass, all played by adequate if not very exciting musicians; on tracks 2, 6 and 8 Arrived Meyer's band adds variety by joining in discreetly. It is amusing to hear Webster leading the saxophones, below the trombone solo, with a note consisting almost entirely of escaping breath. This kind of occasion does not bring Out Webster's full potentialities, but it adds up to a pleasant, restful musical package that many jazz lovers will enjoy. J. P.
